Wien 1927

17 Oct

In every Saturday supplement of the Kurier some name of the moment tells about the “book of their life”. Today it was opera singer Thomas Ebenstein telling about a guidebook to Vienna published in 1927. More than the sights, the book explains the quirks of the Viennese, for example, that the Viennese eat well and stay slender (no longer!), go from the great Burgtheater to a striptease, and from the Philharmoniker to the Heuriger (wine tavern). Yup. That just about sums it up.

The “father” of the family I lived with in 1969-70 worked as a printer at the Kurier. When computers came into the picture, he quit in a huff, and has to this day never looked at a computer screen. Sounds abut right for a certain kind of Viennese, eh?
