Have you seen all the beautiful photos of her and her family? We are all in despair, since nothing seems to be happening to stop this madman. Could you tell me why there haven’t been massive protests in Vienna, as there have been in Berlin and Prague and all around the world? Is Austria trying to station itself as a peace broker? Or do they not care about Ukraine?

I think perhaps we just don’t make it into the world news: https://oesterreich.orf.at/stories/3145172/

But, yes, Austria is, of course, also a neutral country and in many things traditionally a mediator. Austria has prepared to take in refugees from Ukraine and the government has offered Vienna as a neutral place for negotiations. (Not that there seems to be much hope of negotiating with Putin. If he is not taken down from within, I’m not sure what is going to happen. He has, as my mother puts it, his finger on the button. I used to feel OK with that because I didn’t think he was a madman, but he seems to have lost all sense of reason now.)
